ADDINGTON MARKET Large yarding of store cattlevalues ease

More than 700 store cattle were offered at the Addington market yesterday, and with dry conditions prevailing in many districts of Canterbury, the market for quite a number of them was easier.

Most of the 20-month-old steers sold in the $95 to $lO7 range, at which they were several dollars short of recent rates. Adult steers, however, sold well, as there was buying interest from Otago.

Prime stock showed little change on last week’s rates. Prime lambs opened firmly, but with a yarding of 1300 head, values eased a little in the closing stages. A large proportion of the yarding of prime cattle consisted of 20-month-old steers, and for the class of cattle.

they sold much on a par with last week's rates.

Prime lambs

At 1300 bead, the prime-lamb yarding was the largest of the year. For much of the sale values were in line with recent rates, but with the larger entry some of the butchers’ lambs were quoted as easier in the closing stages. Light-weights continued to sell freely. Quality generally was not up to that of r-ecent sales.

Values were:— Butchers’ lambs, 86 to 86.50, with odd sales to 86.70.

Medium lambs, 85.50 to 85.90. Light lambs, 84.85 to 85.30. Leading sales of prime lambs included:—

Although the entry of two-tooth wethers was on the small side, the market was barely firm on last week. However, there were regular sales at 86 or a little more. Ewes had a reasonaly good sale. Better-quality butchers’ ewes continued to reach or better >3, at which price the market was firm.

Best Friesian heifers sold from $l5O to $l5B, good average from $l3O to $146, and others down to $ll7. A Jersey heife-- with calf fetched $lOB and a Friesian cow, with second calf at foot, $132. Store cattle

More than 700 head were offered in the store cattle section, the yarding including a large proportion of forward Angus and Angus cross steers. The main entry comprised a Une of 200 adult steers from the West Coast and with competition from an Otago buyer they sold from $llB to $142 to average more than $127. But with the large yarding and dry conditions setting In in many parts of Canterbury, It was not surprising that the market for some steers should ease. The best of the 20-montli-old cattle were Uttle short of recent rates, but the small to medium steers were $6 to $8 easier.

The best of the 20-month-old cattle reached $l2l, but the general run of steer of this age ranged from $95 to $lO7. Some Angus cross steer calves

from a Banks Peninsula vendor drew strong interest, changing hands at $B7. If this is to serve as a guide to the coming calf selling season, ’some very high prices can be expected. Sales of store cattle included:— Lands and Survey Department (Bell Hill), 200 adult Angus and Angus cross steers at $llB to $142 (average $127.50); estate W. N. Masefield (Kekerengu), 67 20-month-dld Angus steers at $103.50 to $121; H. S. Papps (Springston), 50 two-year-old Angus-Hereford cross steers at $lO9 to $124; R. D. Waghorn (Little Akaloa), 20 18-month-old Hereford and Hereford cross steers at $lO7 to $107.50; Knockindale Estate (Pigeon Bay), 14 Angus cross steer calves at $B7; Lands and Survey Department (Raff Creek), 41 18-month-old Angus steers at $96.50 to $lO4, 10 18-month Hereford steers at $103; Conway Hills, Ltd (Hundalee), 13 18-month Angus cross steers at $106.50; P. and K. M. Le Cren trust (Parnassus), 16 18-month-old Hereford steers at $106.50 to $ll2. Vealers Although the vealer yarding rose from 65 last week to 130, the sale held well to recent rates. The yarding included a big proportion of well-grown vealers, and sales approaching $lOO or more were frequent. Best vealers sold from $95 to $llO, with sales of baby beef to $131.50; medium from $B7 to $94, and light from $75 to $B4. Calves just off cows sold from $4B to Bobby calves did not have a very strong sale. Black and white bull calves sold from $26 to $3l, with odd sales to $33, and black and white heifer calves from $24 to $2B. Fat pigs A larger entry of fat pigs was offered, including a truck of porkers and baconers from the Nelson district. Quality generally was quite good. Butchers’ porkers continued to sell at recent rates, but some of the pigs from outside districts, which were showing the signs of travel, did not meet such a free sale. The baconer yarding was the largest for some weeks, which resulted in a slight easing for some pigs. Only seven choppers were included in the yarding. Values were:— Light porkers, $18.20 to $22. Medium porkers, $22.80 to $24.40. Heavy porkers and light baconers, $25.50 to $27.30. Medium baconers, $2B to $30.30. Heavy baconers, to $35.10. Store pigs

Medium to large stores made up a large part of the store pig yarding. A small entry of weaners and slips met good inquiry, values being firmer by up to $1 a head, particularly for good quality pigs. Other store pigs were firm. A Large White cross sow and litter made $43, and a line of in-pig sows made from $27 to $34. Values were:— Small weaners, $5.50 to $7.50. Medium weaners, $8.20 to $9.50. Best weaners, to $11.20. Slips, $lO.BO to $11.50. Medium stores, $13.60 to $15.80. Large stores, to $19.50.
