GALVESTON, Feb. 21.
A research scientists says that the presence of lithium in drinking water may be a protection against some forms of mental illness, just as fluoride is a protection against tooth decay. “Where lithium is, the mental illness rate declines,” said Dr Earl Dawson, of the University of Texas. Dr Dawson said that his tests showed the incidence of first admissions and frequency of readmissions to mental hospitals in Texas was inversely proportional to the lithium content of drinking water in 21 of the state’s cities.
The incidence of murders, robberies, and crimes of violence also were linked with lithium levels in the water supply in the 21 cities, he said.
