MYSTERY TRIP

Excursion to i Rakaia The answer to three months of guessing was given to members of the Boys’ Brigade on Saturday when a mystery train excursion was held. A train took almost 800 passengers on a trip with a destination unknown to all but one of the passengers. Boys and parents from Christchurch and North Canterbury companies left on a 17-carriage excursion train. When it turned on the south line and stopped at Dunsandel, many passengers thought the destination had been reached—but it proved to be a “trap” stop.

Rakaia was the destination, and when the train halted there, it was some minutes before passengers were persuaded that it was the real stop.

A sports programme had been arranged at the Rakaia Domain. The programme included flat and novelty races, a treasure hunt, and in the afternoon, tabloid sports. The challenge cup for the highest points in the tabloid sports was presented to the Ist Christchurch Company by the Canterbury battalion vice-president (Mr D. Giblin). The company is associated with the Colombo Street Baptist Church.

The Ist Rangiora Company won the cup for the highest number of points in the flat and novelty races, with 36 points. The Shirley-based 31st Christchurch Company was second, with 31.
