ONE TON YACHTING

Trial series | planned (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron is planning a trial series in the spring to select a team of three boats to challenge for the One Ton Cup in Sydney in December. The form of the trials has still to be decided, but it could be a mini-One Ton Cup over similar courses to the five-race series, sailed in the Hauraki Gulf in February, 1971. The trials will have to be completed as early as possible next yachting season to enable the selected boats to cross the Tasman in time for the Sydney series, to start early in December. There is some feeling among One Ton yachting people that the three-boat team for the challenge should be selected on form —past and present—to avoid the necessity of trials. But the squadron has decided on trials, even though the actual format has still to be agreed on. Germany and Italy are understood to be preparing to go to Sydney for the series.
