Old cache sighted
What remains of an old traverse station has been sighted by the National Science Foundation research ship Eltanin at present in the Kainan Bay area of the Ross Sea. It appears that a portion' of the Ross Ice Shelf has broken away to form a small inlet into which the Eltanin steamed. It was from here that the old cache or traverse station was sighted near the top of the ice shelf. It was exposed by the portion which had broken away. In 1963, the Edisto made a similar sighting of Little America 111 floating away on a large iceberg.
Bird bangs annoy
On Friday the Ashburton County Council was told of a petition from six Hinds residents, complaining at another’s method of scaring off birds—a series of explosions, usually in the early morning. The chairman (Mr K. M. Baxter) said that the case was a ciVil matter, between neighbours, and the county could take no action. “Get used to it,” was Jjeard from round the council table.
