Third chair of physics
An American, Dr W. L. Jones, of Boulder, Colorado, has been appointed to the third chair of physics at the ; University of Canterbury. Dr Jones, who is 40, was educated at Phillips Academy Massachusetts, and Cornell University, New York, from which he" graduated bachelor of electrical engineering in June, 1955. For the next five years, he was a research engineer for a Delaware firm and worked
on electrochemical analysis of gases, gas chromatography electron bombardment heating, and chemical reactions in electrical discharges. From 1960 to 1963, Dr Jones studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for his doctorate, paying special attention to the role of physics in meteorology. From September, 1963, he has worked at the National Centre for Atmospheric Research, at Boulder, Colorado. Dr Jones has taught dynamic meteorology at the University of Colorado, and has more than a dozen published papers to his credit.
