TEAM CHOSEN

D. A. Swanston, at 32, the oldest selected, will be Canterbury’s hardest-work-ed competitor at the national cycling championships in Wellington on March 2.

Best-known as a sprinter and 10-miler, Swanston qualified automatically for the kilometre time trial and 4000 metres individual pursuit with his times in the provincial championships. And because there is also a second pursuit team, Swanston is in this. Surprisingly, P. D. Brydon is—at the moment — riding the 1000 metres sprint series. It was felt he would specialise more on the kilometre time trial, the 15,000 metres, and the team pursuit.

Five riders are chosen for a Canterbury track team for the first time.— K. F. Radburnd, G. P. Sword, J. R. Campbell, P. D. Basher, and J. Fowler. The last-three are also representing Canterbury for the first time on track or road, Campbell in his first season.

The team will be managed by D. B. Smith, who will be assisted by Messrs W. W. Thorpe and K. J. J. Grogan. Not available was G. W. Howes, the Timaru junior who performed well in a variety of events at

the provincial championships. Also, M. W. Litolff and D. L. Hubbard were not considered because of injury and illness respectively, and B. G. Stockwell and A. D. Morris, two in the team, were not available for the 15,000 metres. The team, probably the biggest Canterbury has sent to a national championship, is:— OPEN Kilometre time trial.—Stockwell, Brydon, Swanston, J. P. S. Mullan (qualified), J. Schriek, R. M. G. A.
