Golfing ‘double’

(N.Z. Press Association) TIMARU. Mid-South Canterbury golfers made a clean sweep of the Cameron’s Men’s Wear 600 72-hole open tournament and the South Island under 21 teams’ tournament at the Gleniti and Levels courses on Saturday and yesterday. The New Zealand amateur international, R. C. Murray, led a strong field in the open tournament with a four-round total of 280 (70, 67, 71, 72)— six under par and six strokes ahead of the second man, J. Barbour (73, 72, 71, 70) who headed the Mid-South Canterbury under 21 team to victory. It was the first time MidSouth Canterbury had won the title and it was a clearcut win by 10 strokes over Otago, with Canterbury and Southland in third and fourth places respectively. Mid-South Canterbury was an equally convincing winner in the under 21 tournament. With Barbour finishing run-ner-up in the stroke event and G. Maw fourth equal, five strokes back, it had the solid basis for a good win.

C. Alexander and C. Richards put in good scores on most rounds to make sure of the title. Under 21 teams event (best four scores to count in each round): — Mid-South Canterbury.—J.
