Concorde visit not certain
(N.Z.P A. Staff Correspondent) LONDON, Feb. 18. The British Concorde 002 will not necessarily visit New' Zealand if it calls at Australia later this year. The British Aircraft Corporation said that New Zealand had not been deleted from lists of possible calls. However, Air New Zealand, while showing an interest in the Concorde, had not so far indicated that it intended to buy any, whereas Qantas had placed options to buy four of the AngloFrench supersonic passenger jets. Speculation has appeared in the aviation columns of newspapers that Concorde
was likely to visit Australia during the winter. This is apparently the result of a briefing given on Thursday by a Junior Minister at the Department of Trade and Industry. The briefing was attended by aviation correspondents. Spokesmen for the department subsequently insisted that a visit to Australia and the Far East was just one of several possibilities being examined, and nothing had been decided. The department said it was possible that Concorde would visit New Zealand, but it was far too early to say that New Zealand was a “likely” destination.
