QUAX AGAIN IN WINNING FORM

HAMILTON. Three New Zealand records and a thrilling 1500 metres provided an exciting evening of athletics in the Rothmans invitation events at Porritt Stadium on Saturday night.
After the Australian women had given the New Zealand record book a battering, T. J. L. Quax (Auckland) added the final touch with a splendid win in the 1500 metres, in which the American, J. Van Dyk, was fourth. Quax, who usually races from the front, decided before the event that he would change his tactics. After trailing in third and fourth places for most of the race, he unleashed a tremendous [sprint 75 metres from the {tape and won in 3min ;44.65ec. A. Ross was timed at 3min 44.95ec, and A. Polhill in 3min 45.1 sec. Quax covered the last 300 metres in 39.25ec. shattering the belief that he had no sprint. The Australian woman, J. Pollock, continued her comeback when she led all the way in the 800 metres and broke the record of S. Potts by o.7sec, clocking 2min 3.3 sec. She was chased hard over the last lap by the Aucklander, S. Haden, who had a personal best time of 2min 4.3 sec and beat the 'qualifying standard for the lOlympic Games. R. Boyle ran a record 23.35ec for 200 metres, and followed it with another New Zealand best of 11.4 sec in the 100 metres.
