Gallops only at Westport

<From Our Own Reporter) The Westport Jockey Club has decided to run an eight-race galloping programme on both days of its winter meeting on April 29 and May 1. There will be two hack sprints, a hack distance race, two maiden races, a high-weight, an open sprint and an open handicap each day. The feature event on the first-day programme will be the Morley Brown Handicap, run over a distance of one mile and a quarter for a stake of $2OOO.

The club is offering ■ total of $10,900 in stakes for the twoday meeting and it hopes to attract good class horses from both the lower North Island and South Island stables. The club’s fixture will come immediately after the Marlborough-Nelson circuit.

Unlike some other clubs it will not Include trotting events on its programme. Last year trots were deleted from the May card for the first time and there were (jnly seven galloping races.
