Merger view attacked

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Feb. 10. • The Labour Party’s comments on the NMA company take-over appeared illogical, said the Minister of Finance (Mr Muldoon). Labour, which publicly opposed the merger of Wright Stephenson and NMA, now apparently supported the take-over by the London merchant bank, J. H. Vavasseur and Company.

Although Labour’s comments might sound illogical, its policy was exactly the same as when it had opposed the Government’s actions to stop the take-over of a New Zealand newspaper by an overseas company, said Mr Muldoon. Mr Muldoon was commenting on a statement yesterday by the Labour spokesman on finance, Mr R. J. Tizard (Pakuranga) that a dangerous precedent had been established when the Government declared certain NMA share dealings illegal.
