Cabana assured of keeler trophy
The 40ft keeler Cabana added yet another line honours win to its string of successes when it was the first yacht home in the Banks Peninsula Cruising Club’s harbour races held as part of the annual Lyttelton Regatta.
Cabana (L. W. Bachop) cannot now be beaten for the L. X. -Cup, which is awarded to the first division keeler with the greatest number of line honours wins over the season’s racing. W. M. Cotter’s Peri Banu has been the only real competition for Cabana, which has shown the fleet the way with almost monotonous regularity
The first second-division yacht home on Sunday, W. M. Robertson’s Staccato, also has a good record this season for being first yacht home in its division and is well placed to take the equivalent trophy for the second division, the Prospector Plate. D. Matheson’s Main Royal still has a chance to overhaul Staccato, but there are only five races remain-' ing in which line honours count towards the Prospector Plate.
Sixteen first division and 14 second division keelers started in Sunday’s races, which were held In a 12-knot easterly wind. There were, however, many lighter patches around the harbour which created problems for a number of skippers.
The course was from a start line off the Cashin Quay breakwater, around Parsons Rock to port, a beat to Whistling Buoy, a run back up the harbour to
Parsons Rock and then around a mark in Gollans Bay and back Ito the start line. Cabana i covered the course in Ihr 56min 15sec, but over such a short course her small time allowance gave her no chance on handi-
cap M. T. Beasley’s Cavalier, the Auckland-built balsa-fibreglass sandwich yacht which has only occasionally approached its expected performance since it joined the fleet at the beginning of this season, took the first division ra<e on handicap with a corrected time of Ihr 42min 27sec, and also won the Lyttelton Harbour Board Rosebowl. Crusader (K. D. Drayton) was second, a little more than two minutes behind Cavalier, and R. A. Johnstone’s Apiti third, a further two minutes back. Second division handicap honours went to O. R. Barron’s Cybele with a corrected time of Ihr 32min 24sec. G. M. Cop- ; land's big trimaran Lady G, now, . racing with the second division r I after a much-delayed return from the Marlborough Sounds, took second place Imin 21 sec 1 behind and D. S. Hart's Allegro was third. Results were:—
