HISTORIC SITE

Battle in Waikato

The New Zealand Historic Places Trust has been appointed by the Minister of Lands to control and manage the Rangiriri Pa historic reserve, 25 miles north of Hamilton.

the pa was the site of a decisive battle in November, 1863, between 600 Waikato Maori warriors defending the pa, and 1100 British troops. “This encounter, in which both sides suffered many casualties, was the major battle to take place in the Waikato and the site is therefore of considerable historic value,” said the Minister of Lands (Mr Maclntyre).
