Young Cardigan Auckland pick
“The Press” Special Service AUCKLAND.
Young Cardigan, an unlucky runner on the first night, looks to have fine prospects in the Champion Handicap, the first leg of the T.A.B. concession double on the second night of the Auckland Trotting Clubs meeting at Alexandra Park tomorrow.
With two furlongs to go in the Otahuhu Handicap last week, Young Cardigan was travelling comfortably just behind the leader. He was then severely checked by the horse on his outer and sent into a break. His finishing run for fourth was a feature of the race.
His main opposition may come from Sunshine Boy and Bella’s Command. Sunshine Boy was a costly failure on the first night, when he was trying for his sixth successive win. It was not his fault, however, because False Dream swung round in front of him at the start. Sunshine Boy broke and took no part in the race. , Bella’s Command has improved considerably with his race on the first night. He worked very attractively on Tuesday and will line up a much fitter horse. Via Tanza, with two wins and a close second in his last three races, appears a readymade favourite for the second leg, the Greenhithe Restricted Free-for-all.
