Industrials stronger on Australian markets

Industrial stocks gained strongly in markedly buoyant trading on Australian stock exchanges yesterday. Miners also benefited from improved sentiment, while oils settled slightly in continued dull trading.

B.H.P. gained 10c, to 1185 c in Sydney, but slipped to 1180 c in Melbourne. Comalco added 13c at 298 c confirmation of the profit, and also prominent was E.Z. Industries, 10c dearer at 325 c. Tobaccos were dominated by strong support for British Tobacco following release of audited profit figures and year’s review. After Wednesday’s higher profit report the scrip added 18c at 270 c. Philip Morris was taken 5c higher at 1020 c, while Rothmans moved against the trend with a 10c loss at 265 c.

Banks were strong, and sugars and brewers were also well supported. Consolidated Gold moved up 20c to 580 c in line with today’s higher Australian gold price, and Western Mining improved 5c at 318 c, but Peko was a weak spot at 850 c. SYDNEY galet.—Amal.
