DELAY IN STARTING

Disappointment was expressed this week by Mr A. C. Wright, a member of the Meat Board, that the new P and O vessel, the Zaida, would be carrying I no containers of New Zea- ! land chilled beef on its : first voyage between New ; Zealand and Japan. Mr Wright said that the ; line had hoped to hire I containers for this purpose but they were not available and it would now have to have them built and he understood that there would be four or five available for the vessel’s second voyage. The Japanese will only accept chilled beef in containers and Mr Wright said he understood that i

had containers been available for the first voyage there would have been beef offering to fill six or eight—sales could have been made to fill these. On the basis of Australian experience the availability of containers for a New Zealand-Japanese chilled beef trade is expected to open up a lucrative new field of business with Japan. The 6000 tons Zaida will have room for 56 containers on deck. She will load cargo through two doors on the starboard side with interior lifts taking it to various decks where it will be stowed in bulk units by forklift trucks.
