Parishioners building church
The foundations have now been laid for the new All Saints’ Church at Burwood, which is being built in an unusual way by its parishioners. Tenders are being let first to parishioners before outside contractors may bid.
The Rev. M. H. Brown, vicar of Burwood, said that the block-laying, ornamental woodwork, altar furniture, and bond beams were to be done by specialist labour within the parish. Bids had
been made for contracts by parishioners, but some had been waived in favour of cheaper outside prices. “We don’t want any parishioners to pass by the church and say he went broke building it,” Mr Brown By next week, the floor of the new church will be laid, and by the end of the month the roof will be on. Parishioners have raised $20,000 over the last five years to build their church—and in the la’st four months
another $lOOO has been raised. This will be enough to close the church in, and pay for electrical installations and the sanctuary. After this, another target will be set.
Part of the present church will be converted into a chapel and used as Sunday school and Bible class quarters.
The new church is visualised as a centre for community activities, including drama. ’ -
