India and Pakistan
Sir, —If “Risaldar’s” Biblical reference is to suggest that present Western leaders are more “wise” and “prudent” than I, well, I only wish they were. But truth does not rest in mere consensus; the chosen representatives of an illinformed majority suffering from paranoiac insecurity will always defer to the sickmindedness which gave them power. Many New Zealanders are afraid to be genuine nationalists, and tend to condemn nationalism in places like Bangla Desh. Inferior to the World Citizenship ideal, nationalism is neverthless much preferable to super-Power subservience. With this Jesus concurred, or why did the then super-State kill him in fear and mockery as “King of the Jews?” Five hundred years before, an equally great Indian teacher said to disciples: “Be ye islands unto yourselves. Seek not for refuge in others.” Today’s good advice to these islands.—Yours, etc., B. P. LILBURN. December 31', 1971.
