(New Zealand Press Association)
WANGANUI, January 3. Two Wanganui police constables, noticing that a car’s front and rear number-plates were different, led to the apprehension of three youths.
Constables P. Coss and L. Baker, of the Wanganui Central Police Station, saw the car in Somme Parade, Wanganui, about 8 a.m. today. They apprehended the three occupants and took them to the police station for questioning. It was found that the car had been reported missing from Thames, and two of the occupants had escaped from police custody at Kaitaia on Boxing Day. All three will appear in the Magistrate’s Court, Wanganui, tomorrow.
The head of the Wanganui C. 1.8. (Detective Senior-Ser-geant R. L. Butler) said today that two 17-year-old youths would be charged with escaping from lawful custody, and an 18-year-old charged with unlawfully taking a car. The three would also be charged with thefts, burglaries and car conversions at Kaitaia, the Auckland area, Coromandel, the Rotorua area and Wanganui, he said.
