NEWSPAPERS IN INDIA
i Restrictions expected j • I (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) NEW DELHI, January 2. The Indian Government is expected to order newspapers to restrict their size to a maximum of 10 pages during the first three months of the New Year, in a bid to save foreign exchange spent on newsprint imports. A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting yesterday of the Government’s newsprint advisory committee, presided over by the Minister of Information and Broadcasting (Mrs Nandini Satpathy). The decision is understood to have been taken in view of the uncertainty of supplies from the United States, and the need to reduce foreign change spending.
Against a demand of nearly 192,000 tons of newsprint a year, India produces only about 36,000 tons, and imports the rest, mainly from the United States, Canada, Sweden, the Soviet Union and Poland.
