Line honours to Crescendo
Line honours in the annual Wellington-to-Akaroa ocean race have been won by the Wellington one-ton yacht Crescendo (B. H. Barraclough).
Making the most of the light seas and good winds, the vessel crossed the finishing line in Akaroa Harbour at 6.25 p.m. yesterday, well clear of its nearest challengers. to set a new race record of 31 hr 25min. This was 27hr 59min faster than the old record, held by Crescendo. Wellington yachts also recorded second and third fastest times. Caprice (J. A. Oldfield), a 40ft sloop, completed the race in 32hr 46min 54sec. It was closely followed by Castanet (G. Mackenzie) in 32hr 49min 39sec. The first Lyttelton craft to finish was T. M. Rolton’s Ffantasy 111. The 28ft sloop
crossed the finishing line in 32hr 58min 19sec. The largest vessel in the race, Arapawa (B. A. Miller, Wellington), a 47ft sjoop, was fifth fastest with a finishing time of 33hr 57min 30sec. Then came Prospector (R. T. Lloyd, Lyttelton). It sailed into port soon after 9.30 p.m. to become the sixth yacht to finish inside the old race record with a time of 34hr 35min. Late last evening there were still two boats to finish —Aquilla (F. A. Winter, Wellington) and Calypso (A. R. Couling, Lyttelton). They were expected to arrive in the early hours of this morning. The winner of the race on corrected time will not be known until today When all yachts have finished, but the two favourites late last evening were Castanet and Ffantasy m.
