Captain visitor from China

A 4795-ton, Singapore-regis-tered motor vessel, the Ocean Mars, owned by Moon Navigation (Private), Ltd, of Singaport and flying the Singapore ensign, will leave Lyttelton for Gisborne today, to load lucerne pellets for Japan.

At present under charter to the j Japan Line and normally engaged; on the enormous trade route! between the People’s Republic of China and Japan, she was formerly owned by the Japan Line, and, as the Tenwa Maru, was well known in the New ZealandJapan trade. She is discharging general cargo from China, steel and general cargo from Japan, and transhipment cargo from Russia (including canned salmon and crab).

According to Captain Cheng Kam-hai, the entire crew signed on at Hong Kong, but many were born on the mainland, including himself, and were entirely free to visit their families, parents or wives. Seamen, such as those aboard the Ocean Mars, could serve in ships of the republic or they could go to Hong Kong to join a ship, under another flag, and of their own free choice, he said. Captain Cheng Kam-hai said that he occasionally flew north to see his parents in China, his birthplace, without any restriction. He said that the republic had a modern fleet of merchant ships which traded world-wide except to Russia and the United States.

He produced a small red booklet of the writings of Chairman Mao and said that every man in the ship had one. Each week, a class of “good will to all people” was held and the sayings of Mao were read. Irt the saloon is prominently displayed a large portrait of Mao Tse-tung, a New Zealand ensign and a slogan, “Long live the unity’ of the world’s people.” There is also a Christmas tree* a gift from ashore but Captain Cheng Kam-hai said that Christmas meant little, whereas New Year ment much to the Chinese.

Although he lives in Hong Kong, he said he considers himself Chinese, just as a Christchurch citizen might consider himself a New Zealander. He mentioned the recent visit of Christchurch-born Rewi Alley from China to his home town, and remarked that very little was know here about China.

Captain Cheng Kam-hai spoke freely and at length and answered all question. ARRIVAL Maori (6.40 a.m.), 7490, Capt. A. P. Heenan, Wellington (U.S.S.). DEPARTURES Maori (9.23 a.m.), 7490, Capt. A. P.
