Firm price level in Australia

Mining, oil and industrial shares were firm in quiet trading on Australian stock exchanges yesterday. However, some weakness appeared, particularly in the mining sector.

Consolidated Gold gained 10c at 560 c and Western Mining rose to 302 c. Semiestablished miners fared, reasonably well, with Robe River at 95c and Seicast at 115 c, but Metals Ex was 5c lower at 375 c.

Poseidon dropped 80c at 1220 c and N.H.B.C. fell 10c to 300 c. Bougainville was stronger at 262 c and C.R.A. rose 8c at 678 c. Queensland Mines, Peko and Hamersley were unchanged. B.H.P. led a stronger industrial market, rising 15c to 1305 c, while its partner at Mount Newman, C.S.R., gained 2c at 518 c. Comalco, gained 4c at 299 c and Dunlop was 2c higher at 133 c. The banks were firm with the B.N.S.W. 6c higher at 646 c.

Pict changed hands at 145 c after the directors recommendation of the British Tobacco offer.

Among the oils, Santos gained 5c at 310 c and Vamgas was firmer at 27c. Woodside and Burmah were steady, but Mid Eastern dropped 2c at 98c.
