PRISONERS OF WAR

Hanoi rejects gift parcels

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) WASHINGTON, Dec. 30.

North Vietnam has refused to accept more than 900 gift packages posted by families to American prisoners of war and those reported missing in action, the United States Department of Defence reports.

A spokesman for the department described Hanoi’s refusal as “inhumane and uncivilised.” It is the first time since bi-monthly package shipping angements were agreed to by North Vietnam two years ago that any large numbers of them addressed to confirmed prisoners have been returned.

Of the more than 900 packages rejected, about half were addressed to Americans previously identified by Hanoi as prisoners of war. The other half rejected were addressed to men listed by the United States Government as missing in action.

The packages were returned to the United States Army Post Office in New York, and are now being dealt with by the Army for return to the families who sent them.
