APPEAL FOR REFUGEES
Target now sBm The World Council of Churches will increase its cash appeal for relief and rehabilitation work in India and East Pakistan from s4m to sBm. The original appeal issued in June has already resulted in s3m in cash from churches all over the world being transferred to India for work among East Pakistan refugees. There have also been shipments of material aid worth more than s4m, including medicines, foods, tents, and blankets.
Dr A. A. Brash, director of the World Council of Churches’ Commission on Inter-Church Aid, Refugee and World Service, said in Geneva that as well as channelling resources to refugees in India, the commission was now faced with returning refugees and vast numbers of displaced and homeless people in the war-torn areas. Responsible authorities in Calcutta put the number of people involved as high as 20 million. In addition to its relief and rehabilitation programmes in the East, the commission is also seeking information as to how best to respond to the suffering caused by the war in the Punjab, Kashmir, and West Pakistan. A request for World Council of Churches help has already been received from the West Pakistan Christian Council.
