Antarctic climb foiled by snow
(Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.) SCOTT BASE, December 29. Three New Zealanders who left Scott Base last Sunday to climb 10,500 ft Mount Terror were turned back by soft snow when 1500 ft from the summit of the extinct volcano.
They are Mr B. E. Jefferies, deputy leader at Scott Base, and Messes R. D. Parkinson, of Tai Tapu, and L. R. McGhie, of Dunedin. Five men took two motor toboggans and sledges from Scott Base. Two, Messrs R. Chambers, of Dunedin, and J. Foster, of Winchester, remained at the base camp while, the others began the climb from the Ross Ice Shelf at Cape Mackay, 28 miles from Scott Base. The party’s route was up- the south ridge of the mountain. The-party-is now expected to return to Scott Base on Friday. Another party with two dog teams, led by Mr P. J. McNiell, of Auckland, which left Scott Base on Sunday to. travel past Cape Mackay towards Cape Crozier, was also turned back by soft snow. It will now. vjsit White Island before returning on Friday. The other members of the party werq Messrs J. -H. Bull, of.Greytown, 8.. - Strafford, of Marton, and R. K. McBride of Blenheim.
