TROTTING Johnny Gee seeking fourth win in race

Johnny Gee will try for his fourth win in the Stewards’ Free-for-all when the Canterbury Park Trotting Club opens its New Year meeting at Addington Raceway this Saturday.

The distance of the race was shortened to one mile in the 1965-66 season and Johnny Gee has participated in the five contests. As well as his three wins he has finished second once—-to Stylish Major, which won in 2min 2 2-ssec in 1968. Johnny Gee holds the race and New Zealand mile record from a flying start at 2min 1 l-ssec, recorded two seasons ago. On that occasion his stablemate, Tony Bean was runner-up. The etaWematss filled the first two placinga in the race last year, Johnny Gee’s winning time being a comparatively leisurely 2mln 3 3-ssec.

Johnny Gm’s form so far this season has not been very encouraging and a sixth has been his best effort from four starts. He has not raced since last month, but for all that he might stage a come-back on Saturday. Tony Bear, which will be trying for the fourth time to win the race, showed that he will be a top prospect when he finished boldly for seventh to Going at Ashburton last Monday. The Mel-bourne-owned trotter at 11 is a year older than Johnny Gee.

Mighty Chief, the same age as Tony Bear, first contested this race in 1965 when the distance was 10 furlongs. He was unplaced, but two seasons later he managed third to Stylish Major. Aronmot, fourth in 1969, will also be starting in the race for the third time. However, his chances are not'as highly rated as those of Mighty Chief, which did well to run Going to half a length on Monday at Ashburton. Unfortunately he has drawn the outside of the front line at the awkward mile starting point. Precocious and Merrin, two of the most consistent trot* ters in commission, will have bright prospects of extending their records, while Marius, third at Ashburton, and Bambi might also be prominent.

The T.A.B. concession double will be run on the President’s Handicap and the Hogmanay Stakes.

An on-course concession double will be run on the Mobile Stakes and the Raceway Handicap. The jackpot, starting with a pool of $3665.50, wiU be run on the Mobile Stakes, the Raceway Handicap, the Festive Stakes, the President’s Handicap, the Summer Stakes, and the Hogmanay Stakes.
