Insurance challenge

(N.Z. Press Association) HAMILTON, December 29. The Citizens’ Association for Racial Equality is to challenge insurance companies which discriminate against Maoris. The association plans to do this under the newly-passed Race Relations Bill. There was nothing new in discrimination by insurance companies, the secretary of C.A.R.E. (Mr T. Newnhem) said in Auckland today. The association had been attacking this sort of activity for years, he said. At last it seemed that something could be done through the new Race Relations Bill. The basis for the discriminatory life insurance policies of most New Zealand insurance companies seemed to be the idea that Maoris did not live as long as Europeans, he said. This might have been based on past statistical evidence but had had no relevance for the future, said Mr Newnham.
