Big crowd at carnival
The final of the “Junior Miss South Island’ competition drew a crowd of 4500 to the New Brighton New Year carnival in the sound shell last evening, the biggest number to attend so far. The competition, which attracted 15 entrants, was won by Lynda Morris, aged 15. Debbie Black, aged 13, was second, and Mere Nihoniho, aged 12, was third. Ronald Growcott won the hairy legs contest with a champion growth of 1 5-Bin. Entries are still being accepted for the “Mrs South Island” contest, which starts tomorrow, the “Miss South Island” contest, the Carnival Queen contest, and the pop band contest. Other carnival results were: Go go competition. Amakura Mathews 1, Kristene Nikoloff 2, Lana Nichols 3.
Mother and Son competition.—Mrs Bums and Jason 1, Mrs Reynolds and Lance 2, Mrs Pouaka and David 3.
Baby contest, up to 12 months.—Sven James Texter 1, Michelle Diane Gable 2, Sharon Dorothy Murry 3. Highly recommended, Tania and Sonya Gledhill. Thirteen months to 24.—Michelle Goodwin 1, Aaron Lovelace 2, Tracey France 3. Girls’ fancy dress contest. —Patricia Hermansen’s "scarecrow” 1, Lisa de Bont's “Sadie the Cleaning Lady” 2, Helen, Joan and Jackey Round’s “horse and rider” 3.
Boys’ fancy dress contest. —Shane Carter’s Zulu 1, Mark Jeffery’s “What my line?” 2, Gregory Lord’s “Christmas chef,” 3.
