SIR EDWARD MUTESA
Hint of fresh j evidence (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) KAMPALA, Dec. 29. The Uganda Government has reopened investigations into the death in London two years ago of the late Kabaka (King) of Buganda, Sir Edward Mutesa, President Amin disclosed yesterday. Speaking at the laying of a foundation stone for a new mosque in Sir Edward Mutesa’s former kingdom, General Amin said: “Some beautiful Bugandan girls who were sent to London may have had some connection with his death. Investigations are still going on.” The Coroner at the London inquest found that Sir Edward Mutesa died from alcoholic poisoning, but many Bugandans still believe that the alcohol which caused his death was introduced in excessive quantities into a bottle of wine he drank.
The late kabaka was forced to flee to a povertystricken exile during the rule of President Obote. General Amin, then a colonel, led the attack on the kabaka’s palace in Kampala under President Obote’s orders, but he said yesterday that he had deliberately restrained his troops until Sir Edward Mutesa had made good his escape.
