‘Preview' of conductor

Concert audiences will have a preview next year of the N.Z.B.C.’s chief conductor for 1973 he will be one of the guest conductors during the N.Z.B.C. Symphony Orchestra’s concert season.

Brian Priestman, an Englishman at present with the Denver Symphony Orchestra, will introduce himself in a series of concerts next September. He is one of four conductors engaged for 1972. The others are Stanley Black, John Matheson, and Vaclav Smetacek.

Stanley Black will conduct the proms, and Smetacek will, take the baton in the orches-, tra’s engagements in the Auckland Festival next May.; John Matheson is a New Zealander who has made his conducting career in London at Covent Garden and Sadler’s Wells. His tour in July will include concerts in his! home city, Dunedin. Two New Zealand-based musicians will also conduct the orchestra next year. Juan Matteucci, formerly the N.Z.B.C.’s resident conductor, will open the season in April, and the orchestra’s concertmaster, Alex Lindsay, will conduct subscription concerts in Wellington in August.
