RACING Cup hopes on trial at Ellerslie
'•The Press" Special Service .■ AUCKLAND, i It will say little for| their Auckland Cup' prospects if Gene,! Charon, Lord Syntax and Beau Dee fail to collect! stake money of somej description on the second i day of the Auckland) summer meeting this) afternoon.
Gene and Beau Dee are two in the small field for the; Clifford Plate and the other pair are in the Summer Cup.; With only the five horses!
engaged—Bardall, Dark Ruler ; and Foxvale as well as Gene! and Beau Dee—each of the: five acceptors for the Clifford. Plate is guaranteed some-i thing of the $4OOO stake. A condition remaining in) the Auckland summer pro-1 gramme, though, is that! unless the stewards decide! otherwise the stake for the! Clifford Plate shall be reduced by half if the time! for the race is four seconds or more slower than that for the Summer Cup, run just 40 minutes earlier over the same distance.
The condition was introduced some years ago to prevent the Clifford Plate becoming one of those deadly dull weight-for-age affairs, no more than a sprint home. It has not, however, yet needed to be invoked. Last year the two races were run in an identical 2min 4sec and the year before the Clifford Plate; provided the faster gallop byi nearly three seconds. With Gene, in spite of his nine years, still a pretty keen front runner, the pace in the Clifford Plate tomorrow should be strong, but whichever way the race is run victory for Bardall seems just about certain. Under the weight-for-age conditions he has no more to carry than any of his rivals, yet in a
(handicap he would be rejquired to give them very ! large amounts of weight. • Kia Marea, a Hawera mare . i with a good record at i Ellerslie, looks the best pros’ipect for the Summer Cup, [land Kirrama, a champion ;! which will be resuming racking after a spell, promises to )! complete the double in the ''Electric Handicap. I Kia Marea strung together ;! several fine performances (last season, including one in the Century Stakes at .'Wanganui in which she beat > Brookby Hill and Breathalyser • jat level weights. She won l the Thompson Handicap at •iTrentham as well and finished ■i third, close behind Game and ■ Watallan in the Ormond >;Gold Cup. I Kirrama, such a brilliant .) three-year-old last season, 'will be having his first race II since the end of April when .he tackles the Electric ('Handicap, but he is so good, J and his training gallops ■ [lately have been so eye- > catching, that he will very i likely be the favourite. ; Kaukapakapa, from • Awapuni, and Codeene, from I Hastings, are two of the > smart gallopers opposed to Kirrama: another is the con- . sistent Taranaki mare .
