Surprises at Washdyke

Racing at Washdyke yesterday started and ended with surprise results. Pieman won the Temuka Stakes, the first race on the card at odds of over 60 to 1, and Eastern Royal was at doublefigure odds when she narrowly beat the unlucky Quick Magic in the final event, the Champion Hack Handicap. . Quick Magic was at the height of a likely run from the pack and close to Eastern Royal when his rider appeared, to be in difficulties in close quarters ana the Riccarton five-year-old failed by only half a -neck. Meneleus showed gameness after pulling hard to save third place in the Champion Hack Handicap, none of the others being really concerned in the finish.
