Press strike in Singapore
(N.Z Press Assn. —Copyright; SINGAPORE, Dec. 27. Singapore was without its main English-language newspaper for the fourth day today because of a strike by “Straits Times” journalists and printers, but the Malaysian edition did appear in Kuala Lumpur. The “Straits Times,” the largest English-language newspaper in South-East Asia, stopped publication on Friday; the “New Nation,” an evening newspaper stopped printing on Thursday. A dispute between the managements and two unions about the terms of apprenticeship and fringe benefits, initially arose in connection with year-end bonuses. Union members demanded a bonus equal to three months pay, and the managements refused to go above one and threequarter months. This is the first time the newspaper has had to stop printing because of a labour dispute in the 126 years the “Straits Times” has been in existence.
