Brigade has a unique role
The Lyttelton Volunteer Fire Brigade will celebrate its centenary in the middle of 1973. This vital unit in the port comes under the jurisdiction of the Christchurch Metropolitan Fire Board, but has its own identity ana a proud record. It is so closely connected with the waterfront that it frequently makes shipping news. For instance, its very composition has an interestingly nautical flavour. It contains 11 watersiders, seven Lyttelton Harbour Board employees and three shipwrights. All these men are directly connected with shipping. The senior station officer (Mr J. Fogarty) is a transport driver who also has close contact with the waterfront and there is also a timber yard employee. At present the brigade, is one below its full strength of 24 men. It is a common sight when the fire alarm sounds in daytime, to see volunteer brigadesmen sprinting along rhe wharf and up the steep roads to the fire station. It is even more astonishing to see how rapidly they turn out to combat a fire. The fires are varied. Sometimes they are engaged deep in the interior of a vessel and at other times they are scrambling up the steep Lyttelton hill slopes fighting a grass fire. Again, they can, and do when required, operate outside Lyttelton; even into Christchurch. When fighting fires on land they use shore supply water but when engaged on the waterfront, they have the great reservoir of the harbour from which to draw. As far as is known, Lyttelton is the only major New Zealand port which has a volunteer fire brigade. Centennial plans have not yet been completed but will probably include a dinner, a ball, and certainly a fire display. ARRIVAL Maori (6.34 p.m.), 7490, Capt. J. D. Cleaver. Wellington (U.S.S.).
