No spare beds
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Dec. 27. Homeless men have been faced with a bleak Christmas in the capital, and one 31-year-old man was forced to turn to the police for a cell bed because he could not find anywhere else to sleep.
Seven men were turned away from one of Wellington’s night shelters last night because there was no room, and another night shelter reported no spare beds. In the Wellington Magis■trate’s Court today the 31-year-old man, charged with (being idle and disorderly, ! told the Court he gave himself up at Taranaki Street police station because he had no money and was unable 1 to find a place to sleep. Alan Stephen Terry Mui- ] let, who was remanded on 1 bail for a week, told the Court he had been trying 1 without success to find a bed ‘ and that there were no prospects of employment until after the Christmas holidays. He said he had been out of work for three days and had no money.
