GAMES “FUNDS”
Distinction explained From inquiries which had been made during the last few days, it was evident that there was some confusion in persons’ minds over “funds" for the Commonwealth Games, said the chairman of the Games organising committee (Mr R. S. Scott) yesterday. “I am obliged to make it clear that there is no such thing in Christchurch as a •Mayor’s Commonwealth Games Fund.’ The only appeal or fund-raising activities for the Commonwealth Games are administered by appropriate committees set up by the organising committee. Funds raised will go towards the operational costs of the Games. “However, the Mayor has opened, as he is entitled to do, a ‘Mayor’s Queen Elizabeth , II Park Development Fund* appropriately named, to which the public may contribute towards the cost of building the Christchurch City Council’s combined swimming and athletics facilities at North Brighton. “Such contributions by companies or individuals do not qualify for tax deductability through the organising committee as arranged with the Department of Inland Revenue, nor for other privileges including seating and booking rights in the same way that contributions of $5OO or more to the Commonwealth Games Appeal Fund may qualify. “Naturally, it is hoped that both funds will be well supported,” said Mr Scott,
