Halswell speed
Representatives of the Halswell Road Action committee yesterday met the member of Parliament for Wigram (Mr M. A. Connelly) in an effort to have the speed restriction on Highway 75 through Halswell lowered from 40 miles an hour to 30 miles an hour. The committee also wants a pedestrian crossing placed across the highway between Lillian Street and the Halswell Domain.
The road through Halswell forms part of the main Akaroa highway and is expected to be very busy during the holidays. The committee is particularly concerned for the safety of children who will have to cross the road from the main settlement at Halswell to use the new swimming baths which are in the domain.
After speaking with the president of the committee (Mr C. Crawford) and the secretary (Mr R. T. Attwell), Mr Connelly left for Wellington where he was to discuss the matter with the Ministry of Works, the chairman of the National Roads Board (the Minister of Works, Mr Allen) and the Minister of Transport (Mr Gordon). If the speed restriction is lowered it would apply to the area from Dunbars Road to the Halswell telephone exchange.
Toys for I.H.C. Toys for the intellectually handicapped children of
Christchurch have been mounting up under the Christmas tree in the Bank of New South Wales during the past weeks and this morning they will be handed over to a representative from the Intellectually Handicapped Children’s Society by the bank’s manager (Mr T. S. George). Collection boxes of the Society, which are hung round the tree, help to raise funds for the children. The Christmas tree in the bank surrounded with its collection of toys has become something of a tradition in the bank. The toys will go to the children’s unit at Templeton Hospital.
