Serum for cat “snuffles”

(New Zealand Press Association)

DUNEDIN, December 22.

A serum for treating a highly infectious virus, which causes sneezing sickness in cats, has been developed after research in a Dunedin cattery.

The virus- is known scientificially as feline rhinotracheitus, but most cat owners call it “the snuffles.”

It was hoped that a New Zealand biological drug firm would produce the inoculation serum commercially for cat owners throughout the country, said a Dunedin veterinary surgeon today. Almost as widespread in cats as the common cold is in humans, the disease affects fully-grown cats and kittens. It does not affect other animals.

Because the disease is highly infectious, one sneezing cat may infect every cat

nearby within 10 days. An outbreak is occurring’ In Isolated areas in Dunedin at present.

Symptoms for cat owners to watch for are runny eyes, loss of appetite and sneezing. Owners must act quickly on noting these symptoms for, although the ailment usually affects only the nose and trachea, complications such as viral pneumonia can develop if the infection moves towards the cat’s lungs.
