RETENTION OF 6c

Coming wheat harvest (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Dec. 22. The Government has approved the retention of 6c a bushel from payments to growers for the millingstandard wheat from the 1972 harvest. The money would be used to cover any costs and losses incurred in disposing of any of that wheat surplus to New Zealand’s requirements, said the Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr Shelton). A surplus of between Im and 2m bushels seemed likely, said the Minister. The amount of the retention was recommended by the Wheat Board and the wheatgrowers* sub-section of Federated Farmers in terms of the retention scheme first agreed between Government and growers in 1968. In the event of any of the retained money not being required, the board would pay a refund to growers, said Mr Shelton.
