Coal dearer

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Dec. 22. The price of coal from State mines has been increased. It is the first general rise in State coalmine prices since January 1, 1967. Increases were made by private mines in June. The Under-Secretary of Mines (Mr Dick), said in a statement today that costs had risen substantially in the last few years. Although there had been considerable improvements in productivity, State coalmine losses were now much heavier than they had been a year or two ago. “The Increase in price will recover part of these losses and. through further

mechanisation and greater productivity, I will try to bold prices at the new levels for another long period,” said Mr Dick. The Increased prices at the mine vary according to the type of coal and the locality. Wholesale and retail price margins have also been reviewed, and applications for increases lodged with the Price Tribunal.

The effect on the cost of industrial coal would be an Increase of between 25c and 65c (4 per cent to 10 per cent) a ton. Retail prices of domestic coal are expected to increase by amounts ranging from 12c for a 1401 b bag of Waikato coal at Auckland to 9c on a bag of Ohai coal at Christchurch.
