Investors await currency alignment decision

Mining, oil and industrial stocks finished on a mixed note after moder-

ately active trading on Australian stock exchanges yesterday. With the question of alignment of the Australian dollar undecided few investors proved willing to exhibit the confidence which marked trading in the mining sector in recent days.

Poseidon gained 50c at 1250 c and C.R.A. was 16c higher at 646 c, but Metals Ex., which still has to find contracts for the sale of its Mount Keith nickel, dropped 23c at 352 c and N.B.H.C. was 25c lower at 300 c.

Nabarlek partners, Queensland Mines and Kathleen Investments, were cut back, while Utah gained 35c at 320 c.

Western Mining lost 6c at 280 c in the wake of the quarterly report, but Consolidated Gold was higher at 530 c. Bougainville, Great Boulder, Hamersley and Renison were unchanged. Industrial leader, 8.H.P., was steady on 1210 c, after opening at 1190 c, while Herald at 405 c and Bank of N.S.W. at 640 c each gained 10c. Retailers, Paterson and Walton, were easier, while Pict sold at the offer price of 150 c.

The sugar stocks were mixed. Pioneer rose 5c at 270 c and C.S.R. eased 2c at 510 c. Permewan and Custom Credit improved, but EldersG.M. lost some of Tuesday’s gains at 171 c.

In the oil sector Magellan lost 5c at 95c. Bridge, Endeavour and Mid Eastern eased slightly but N.S.W. Oil and Gas was higher at 9c. Vamgas and Woodside-Bur-mah were steady.
