Stockwell back to his best

Although he did not have the best record tn the evening—p. D. Brydon, with three outstanding quarter-mlle rides, earned that distinction—B. G. Stockwell confirmed at English Park last evening that he is back in track cycling with a vengeance. A strong man at Denton Park on Sunday, Stockwell last night turned sprinter for the main race, and outlasted a field depleted by constant attacking at the finish of the five-mlla scratch race. Bia margin waa close, but Stockwell clearly had the measure of M. D. Payne. Although bo won the Acea quarter-mlle and a "devil take the hindmost,” Brydon’t best efforts were in the open quartermile handicap series. He won his heat, easing Up, In 20.4 sec; then went even better in the fins], ZO.lsec. Payne and 3. Schriek were also under sOaec in their heats; while R. M. G. A. Beyde rode the fastest mile by a back-marker this season when he won the handicap race from Stockwell and Brydon in Smin l.Seec. Bo started coming round from fourback with about no yards to ride and won easily.

K. L. Day continued his tactical domination of the other novices by winning the A grade quarter-mlle and * SOO-metre sprint series. For good measure, he waa also the best in the bellsprint pointe race. ■ O. R. G. Williams was the best of the other novices, : winning two races, while T. ; Webb was a narrow winner of I the North Avon Butchery half- • mile. ■ Results:— AMATIUR i Scratch.—Four-lap doubleharness station pursuit: D.
