Extension of benefit
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Dec. 22. The Government has approved an extension to the higher medical benefit for social security beneficiaries and persons receiving meanstest war pensions and allowances. The Minister of Health (Mr McKay) said the new rate would be available to all persons aged 65 and over who were New Zealand citizens or who were ordinarily resident in New Zealand and who did not already qualify for the higher medical benefit.
It would also be extended to persons under 65, eligible for health benefits in New Zealand, who were in receipt of an overseas benefit, pension or allowance, but whose income did not exceed the limit for means-test social security benefits and meanstest war pensions and allowances in New Zealand. The wives and dependent children of these persons would also qualify for the higher medical benefit.
Mr McKay said that while this decision would apply to a limited number of people, it corrected certain anomalies which had become apparent in the original conditions governing the higher medical benefit.
