Caroline Face attempt

(From Our Own Reporter) TIMARU, Dec. 22. The 7000 ft Caroline Face of Mount Cook, on the southern side of the mountain, is being climbed by two Christchurch climbers. First climbed in November, 1970, by Peter Gough (Christchurch) and John Glasgow (Nelson), who had previously made an unsuccessful attempt on the almost sheer ice-face In December, 1969, the Caroline Face has only been climbed three times.

This morning, John Visser and Robert Rainsbury, both members of the Canterbury Mountaineering Club, set out from the Ball* Hut and this afternoon were on the middle arete, about, two--1 two-thirds of the way up the ' face. They had 3000 ft to go.
