Slug pellets kill dogs

(N.Z. Press Association) i NEW PLYMOUTH, Dec. 13. Garden slug pellets killed two prize-winning German Shepherd dogs at New Plymouth during the week-end. The dog’s owner, Mr D. Clarkson, said the two four-year-old dogs each accidently took a mouthful of pellets on Saturday. All efforts to save their lives failed. “The instructions on the packet suggest that a salt and water emetic should be given. We tried this but it did not; make them vomit.

“When I saw what the pel-; lets did to these two big dogs,: Il wondered what would hap-i pen to children eating some! of the stuff.” The veterinary surgeon who led the fight to save the dogs’ lives, Mr R. L. Dunnet, believes that more people should be made aware of dangers of the pellets. He said the lethal chemical in the material was methaldehyde, which is included in a bran base which appears to attract both cats and dogs. The Health Department said it had no records of 'children taking the pellets.
