Leon Masterton pick

<r Tn« Press” Special Service WELLINGTON, Dec. 10.

Leon and Richman, two which have raced well on the track before, look set to battle out the finish of the Tui Brewery Gold Cup, first leg of the Masterton Racing Club’s T.A.B. double at Opaki today.

Leon has a fine record in mile races on the Mastertoi}

track. In October he won the Teachers Whisky Handicap for the second year in succession and after that went pn to win the Pearce Handicap, also over a mile at Trentham.

Although he comes back to Masterton with a fine record, his run will be the first from the stable of the trainerjockey, B. S. Dodds, who will be his rider.

Richman’s strong finish landed him a good winner at Woodville last time and on the strength of that run he looks to have a fine chance.

Apart from his good form, Richman has another important point in his favour. He will be ridden by the Awapuni apprentice, G. Clutterbuck, very much an in-form rider. He won the main handicap at Otaki on Fort Hagen last Saturday.

Spa, a fine winner at Feilding two starts back, failed at Wanganui. But he should run out a solid mile all the same. He has won over the distance before and today he will renew his association with W. D. Skelton.

Ayub Khan won the race last year and looks right in form if his run at Woodville was any guide. He finished strongly over Six furlongs for second and his conqueror on that occasion was Rich Return.

Purdie could only manage to finish eighth last time but in the small field and with a long straight to help, he looks the hardest to beat in the Edward Lumley Handicap, second leg of the T.A.B. double. Purdie, which was successful three starts back, is getting ready for a tilt at the Auckland Cup. A four-year-old by Oncidium, he looks an out-and-out stayer whose class should carry him through. Purdie’s stablemate, Magnifique, was only a moderate ninth at Otaki last Saturday but that was her first run since returning from Riccarton after running third in the New Zealand Oaks. The run should have improved her and with only 7st 71b she looks a top light-weight chance. She is to travel to Ellerslie for the cup meeting as well. SelecUons:—
