Canterbury not to pay
The Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association will refuse to pay 15 per cent of its profit from the Benson and Hedges women’s tennis tournament to the national body. When these players were brought to New Zealand by the Auckland association they were offered to the N.Z.L.T.A.’s management committee, but the committee turned down the opportunity of running the tournaments because of the expense Involved, the chairman of the C.L.T.A. (Mr R. B. Brown) said at last evening’s meeting of the management committee. Auckland and Canterbury accepted the tournaments, and later the national association asked for 15 per cent of the profit, as this amount was payable on any open tournament.
“But,” said Mr Brown, “ours was not an open tournament.” “If this becomes a major Issue, the smaller associations might not support us.” said Mr A. B. McCallum. "They might be envious that, because of circumstances, they cannot get the good things going in tennis at present, and feel that monies paid to the N.Z.L.T.A. might be more beneficial to them. Although it will be probably two months before accounts are completed, the C.L.T.A. expects to make a profit of between $6OOO and $7OOO on the women's tournament Admission fees.—Prices for the Canterbury championships at Wilding Park from December 30 to January 2 will be: Thursday and Friday, adults 60c, children 20c; Saturday and Sunday, adults $l. children 50c.
