Softball’s dilemma
The Canterbury Softball Association may have been set a problem deciding the club to represent the province In the John Lennon Trophy national Inter-club championship at Blenheim next March.
At last evening's meeUng of the association's management committee, Mr W. Heath said there was a possibility two teams would be “technically tied" when the qualifying period was reached after next Saturday. While Papanui had a lead of four points over United in the Cooper Henderson Motors championship, Papanui had played one match more than Its rival. With Papanui playing the third-placed team, Richmond, and United meeting Deep Freeze this evening, it was possible for United to be two points behind Papanui with a game in hand. Mr Heath said that next Saturday’s matches could not be taken . into account because United’s outstanding fixture was' a floodlit one.
The president (Mr J. A. Gibson) said that if the situation did arise after this evening's games, a special elimination match may have to be played soon after the resumption of the competition. Tournament.—Permission was given to United to be host to the Webb Shield national United clubs’ tournament In Christchurch next Easter. It will be played at the Albion Rugby club’s ground. Middleton Road, Rlccarton.
